A General Ledger detail report and a trial balance are different views of the same accounting system.
When they do not, the difference deserves an explanation.
Start by Making Sure the Comparison Is Fair
Before assuming the data is wrong, confirm the period, account range, company, filters, posting status, beginning balances, and other selection criteria are actually the same.
A reconciliation only means something if both reports are answering the same question.
Then Follow the Detail
The trial balance gives summarized account balances. The detail report explains the activity underneath them.
If the summary and detail do not agree, we want to isolate which account, period, source, or posting sequence creates the difference.
Do Not Treat the Difference as an Excel Problem
Exporting both reports and forcing them to agree in a spreadsheet may produce a presentable answer. It does not necessarily explain the system.
We want Sage to tell one coherent story before Excel becomes the cleanup crew.
