What Production Management Actually Does in Sage 100

Production Management connects work tickets, work in process, labor, materials, scheduling, and costing so Sage 100 can follow what happens while a manufacturer turns inventory into a finished good.

Production Management is Sage 100's manufacturing workflow for organizations that need visibility into work in process, labor, materials, scheduling, and the costs behind a finished good or subassembly.

Sage describes it as the replacement for the legacy Work Order module and positions it for make-to-stock and make-to-promise manufacturing.

The Work Ticket Is the Center of the Story

A work ticket represents the work required to produce something.

Sage documents several ways a work ticket can be created:

  • Copy from an open work ticket
  • Copy from work-ticket history
  • Create from an inventory item
  • Create from a bill of materials
  • Create from a work-ticket template

That flexibility matters because manufacturing work does not always begin from the same place. Some products repeat constantly. Some begin from a bill. Some are based on an earlier job. Some need a template that already understands the routing and resources involved.

Work Tickets Carry More Than a Quantity

Sage documents work tickets as containing information such as the quantity or yield to be made, production steps and work instructions, materials and components, and budgets for labor hours, labor costs, and material quantities.

That is what turns the work ticket from a production note into an operational record.

It is not merely saying: “Build 100 of these.”

It can also describe:

  • How the item is supposed to be built
  • What material it is expected to consume
  • What labor is expected
  • Where the work occurs
  • What tooling may be required
  • How the work is scheduled
  • What the planned cost looks like before production begins

Templates Make Repeated Work Repeatable

Work-ticket templates can act as a blueprint for future production.

Sage documents templates containing activity codes, work centers, tool codes, budget values, scaling and scheduling parameters, material requirements, and attachments.

Those attachments can include drawings, images, or other specifications.

That is important because manufacturing knowledge often lives outside accounting: on a drawing, in a routing, inside a specification, or in the sequence somebody on the shop floor knows by heart.

A useful production system tries to make that process repeatable instead of relying entirely on somebody remembering it.

Production Management Tracks Work in Process

Until production is complete, material and labor can represent value sitting inside unfinished work.

Production Management includes work-in-process tracking so the business can follow costs and progress associated with the production of finished goods.

Sage documents multiple cost-completion methods:

  • Actual
  • Lower of planned or actual
  • Planned

It also documents multiple ways to issue labor and material:

  • Manual
  • Auto issue
  • Backflush

Dynamic labor and material options can also support real-time updates to tracking.

There is no universal answer for how every manufacturer should record production. The useful part is having a system flexible enough to represent the method the business actually uses.

Scheduling Is Part of the Work Ticket

Production Management includes scheduling functions for work centers.

Sage documents working calendars and capacity, along with both forward and backward scheduling for individual work tickets.

The module uses what Sage describes as an infinite-loading technique. Each work ticket is scheduled as though it were the only work ticket competing for that work center.

That approach makes demand visible—and makes it easier to see where the demand being scheduled may exceed practical work-center capacity.

Production Management Is Connected to Other Sage Modules

This is where the module becomes much more than a manufacturing island.

Sage documents integrations with Payroll, Accounts Payable, Purchase Order, and Bill of Materials.

  • Production labor information can connect to Payroll.
  • Purchase orders can be created from Work Ticket Entry.
  • Purchased items can be linked to open work tickets.
  • AP costs can be distributed to work tickets.
  • Bills of Materials can feed work-ticket templates, steps, and materials.

That is why troubleshooting a manufacturing problem often means following more than one module.

Production Costing Is Still Evolving

Sage has continued making practical changes to Production Management.

In Sage 100 2025.0, Sage added the ability to establish a standard cost rate per piece for an activity code, rather than requiring every standard activity cost to be measured only by time.

That is a useful example of the kind of manufacturing detail that sounds tiny from outside the system but can matter quite a bit to the people actually calculating production costs.

What Production Management Is Really Trying to Answer

  • What are we making?
  • How much are we making?
  • What steps are required?
  • What materials are required?
  • What labor is required?
  • When is the work expected to happen?
  • What is currently in process?
  • What did the work actually cost?

Those are manufacturing questions.

They are also accounting questions.

Production Management exists in the space between the two.

If Your Production Setup Looks Complicated, That May Be Because Manufacturing Is Complicated

A real production environment can accumulate templates, bills, work centers, activity codes, cost methods, labor processes, purchasing dependencies, reports, and years of operational habits.

That does not automatically mean the setup is bad.

It means the configuration should be understood before somebody starts simplifying it.

When we work with an existing Production Management environment, the first goal is usually to understand the path of the work:

What was supposed to happen, what actually happened, and where did Sage record the difference?

That is a much better place to begin than staring at a work ticket and hoping the answer jumps out.
