Shipping in Sage 100: Where It Fits in the Order-to-Delivery Workflow

Shipping in Sage 100 connects Sales Order, warehouse fulfillment, package information, barcode processes, carrier integrations, tracking, and invoicing.

Shipping in Sage 100 sits at the end of a much larger order and warehouse process. By the time a package is ready to leave the building, customer information, inventory availability, the ship-from location, picking, packing, freight, and the sales order may all already be involved.

That is why shipping should be treated as part of the Sage 100 workflow rather than as a completely separate last step.

Shipping Begins Back in Sales Order

Sage 100 Sales Order supports order-level shipping information including ship-to address, ship date, ship-from location, and drop-ship designations. Quantity information associated with standard orders is updated as orders move through shipping and invoicing.

For businesses with multiple locations, that ship-from information matters. The order needs to reflect where fulfillment is actually happening, especially when inventory and warehouse activity are being managed by location.

Picking and Packing Feed the Shipment

Sage notes that barcodes can be included on Sales Order picking and packing sheets to help improve efficiency while packages are assembled.

Mobility for Barcode also supports picking, packing, and shipping activity using barcode information captured from scanners, mobile tablets, or smartphones and brought into Sage 100 as transactions.

Weight, Volume, and Package Information Matter

When item details include weight or volume information, or when an integrated scale is being used, Sage 100 can calculate or record weight and volume for packages.

That becomes especially important when shipping software or carrier-rate integrations rely on accurate package information. If the item setup, package information, or integration is wrong, the issue may become visible at the shipping station even though the cause started somewhere else.

Carrier Integrations Can Extend the Workflow

Sage’s distribution brochure describes available third-party integrations that use the included business object interface to access rates from primary package carriers. Those rates can be used on packing lists or invoices, either as returned by the carrier or with a markup.

Tracking numbers can also be recorded and included on invoices. For the customer, that is a small detail that makes a large difference: the shipment has moved from an internal warehouse transaction to something the customer can actually follow.

Shipping Permissions Are Part of Control

Sage 100 includes features for assigning shipping IDs to individuals and associating access permissions with those users.

That is worth reviewing when a company is changing staff, redesigning warehouse responsibilities, or upgrading a system that has accumulated years of user security settings.

The Shipping Station Is Usually an Integration Point

In the real world, many Sage environments include additional shipping applications, carrier tools, scales, barcode devices, custom forms, or integrations. The important part is understanding how those pieces communicate with Sage and what information each system owns.

Before changing a Sage environment, especially during an upgrade, shipping integrations should be identified and tested. A shipping process can look simple to the person printing a label while depending on several quiet connections underneath it.

A Good Shipping Review Follows the Order

When shipping is not behaving the way a company expects, we like to follow the transaction from the beginning: the Sales Order, the warehouse and inventory information, the pick and pack process, package data, the shipping integration, and finally the invoice and tracking information.

That approach is usually more useful than treating the shipping station as an island. In Sage 100, the shipment is the visible end of a workflow that started much earlier.
