The Scanner Solves Identification First
A barcode lets the user identify an item quickly and consistently.
For a count workflow, that can remove a lot of searching and re-keying before the quantity is even entered.
The Form Matters
We are especially particular about barcode forms because the printed or displayed barcode has to represent the identifier the scanner and Sage workflow actually expect.
Item number, alias, UPC/EAN, lot, serial, warehouse, and other identifiers can each have different roles. The form should be designed around the transaction being performed.
You Do Not Always Need a Giant Warehouse Project
Sage's distribution environment supports broader barcode mobility, but some clients mainly want a faster physical-count process.
We have integrated handheld scanning devices for exactly that reason: make the count faster, reduce manual lookup and transcription, and give the warehouse a tool people will actually use.

Sage 100 2025.0 added UPC/EAN maintenance options and additional Physical Count Report and Worksheet controls.
Those improvements can complement barcode-based workflows by giving the inventory record and the count documentation better item-identification options.
